Antique Dutch Delft, De Grieksche A – 3 piece Garniture set vases, 18th century

Antique Delftware 18th century garniture ‘kaststel’, comprising a baluster-form vase and cover and a pair of beaker vases.

Each piece is of hexagonal form and decorated in underglaze blue. The front is molded with a floral cartouche enclosing a landscape with buildings, while the reverse is painted with a leafy flowering branch. The cover is surmounted by a bird-form finial.

The bases bear the PVMV factory mark of Pieter van Marksveld, proprietor of De Grieksche A, Delft, between 1796 and 1811.

Founded in the seventeenth century, De Grieksche A was among the longest-operating Delft pottery factories and remained active well into the nineteenth century. Under Pieter van Marksveld’s ownership, the factory continued to produce tin-glazed earthenware in established Delft traditions, despite increasing competition from English creamware and porcelain. Garniture sets such as the present example, intended for display on mantelpieces or cupboards, remained popular domestic furnishings and reflect the enduring appeal of blue-and-white Delftware at the turn of the nineteenth century.

Condition: Some minor en more severe chips, hairline to beaker vase.
