Exceptionally Large Polychrome ‘Cashemere’ Dutch Delftware Charger

A large Dutch Delftware rosewater dish, painted in cobalt blue on an opaque white tin glaze. The moulded form consists of a shallow central well with a domed centre, surrounded by raised concentric bands and an exaggerated broad rim. The domed central medallion depicts two Chinese figures seated on a garden terrace, with a pavilion and mountainous landscape in the distance. It is surrounded by dense bands of flowering plants, foliate scrollwork and lappet-shaped ornament. The broad rim is painted with four figural scenes showing Chinese dignitaries, scholars and attendants among pierced rocks, pine trees, shrubs and garden fences. The decoration is derived from Chinese Transitional porcelain of the seventeenth century. Rather than following a single porcelain prototype, the Delft painter combined various Asian figures and landscape motifs within a distinctly European form. Rosewater dishes were made to contain rosewater or other scented liquids. These could be used to refresh or cleanse the hands, or to perfume the surrounding air. Their large dimensions, elaborate decoration and association with refined dining customs also made them suitable for prominent display. The reverse is decorated in blue with a repeated pattern of stylised circular motifs separated by vertical lines. Unmarked. The form belongs to a group of large Delft rosewater dishes dating from the final quarter of the seventeenth century. Closely related examples from circa 1675–1680 have been attributed to Samuel van Eenhoorn, owner of De Grieksche A from 1678 until 1686. Without a factory mark, however, an attribution of the present dish remains uncertain. Delft, circa 1680.

Pair of Blue and White Dutch Delftware Garlic-Neck Vases A pair of octagonal blue and white Dutch Delftware garlic-neck vases, each with a bulbous body supported on a spreading foot and a tall, slender neck with a pronounced knop beneath the flaring trumpet-shaped mouth. The vases are painted in the Transitional style with continuous narrative scenes of Chinese figures in a landscape with trees, rocks and vegetation. This type of decoration was inspired by Chinese porcelain produced during the transitional period between the Ming and Qing dynasties. Delft potters adapted these porcelain designs to the larger, strongly articulated forms of Dutch faience. Delft, circa 1670. Height: 36 cm.

Pair of Blue and White Dutch Delftware Garlic-Neck Vases, late 17th century

A pair of mid-18th-century Dutch Delftware wall plaques with blue-painted biblical scenes and polychrome moulded borders. Each plaque has a suspension hole at the top and a projecting socket below, made to receive a candle arm. The pair was designed as wall sconces, combining candlelight with a narrative image in tin-glazed earthenware. The plaques depict the Finding of Moses (Exodus 2:5–6). Pharaoh’s daughter stands beneath a parasol beside the river as an attendant bends towards the infant in his basket. The central scenes are framed by scrollwork and floral ornament picked out in yellow, green and manganese, with small panels depicting sheep on either side. Both plaques follow the same composition, with slight differences in the painted details. The scene derives from one of six Old Testament subjects designed by Jacopo Amigoni (1682–1752) and circulated as engravings published by Joseph Wagner in Venice. The other subjects include David and Abigail, Rebecca at the Well, Moses Striking a Shepherd, Abraham Kneeling before the Three Angels and Jacob’s Ladder. The National Gallery of Art, Washington, holds a complete set (inv. nos. 1984.84.1–1984.84.6), including The Finding of Moses, inv. no. 1984.84.1. www.nga.gov Similar examples: A Delftware plaque with the same subject is in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, inv. no. BK-1958-34-A. Another is in the Cleveland Museum of Art, inv. no. 2024.12. www.rijksmuseum.nl Literature relating to the Rijksmuseum example: Henry Havard, Catalogue chronologique et raisonné des faïences de Delft composant la collection de John F.
