Delft ‘Peacock’ plate by The Claauw – second half 18th century

ABOUT THIS ITEM

A fine Dutch Delft blue and white ‘Peacock’ plate dating to the second half of the 18th century, with an ochre-edged rim. The center is decorated in deep cobalt blue with a vase containing peacock feathers and stylized flowers, one of the most enduring and recognizable motifs in Delftware design. The border is adorned with scrolling foliage and floral heads, painted in a rhythmic, symmetrical arrangement.

The plate is marked with the claw symbol (De Klaauw), one of the principal Delft factories active between 1661 and 1840. De Klaauw was renowned for its refined blue-and-white decoration, particularly the ‘Peacock’ (Pauwstaart) pattern, which became a hallmark of 18th-century Delft production and was widely collected both in the Netherlands and abroad.

Very good condition; light chipping and usual wear to the rim.

Diameter: 26 centimeters
