ABOUT THIS ITEM

Dutch Delft ‘Peacock’ plate, De Klaauw factory, second half 18th century. This blue and white Delft plate, a fine example of 18th-century Delftware, features a central urn containing a fan of peacock feathers with stylized floral elements, painted in cobalt blue on a white tin-glazed earthenware surface. The rim has scrolling patterns with small floral motifs and an ocre-colored border, typical of European decorative pottery from this period.

The ‘Peacock’ motif (“pauwenstaart”) is a recurring decorative element in antique Dutch ceramics, commonly found on large Delft plates and chargers intended for display. The design reflects the influence of Chinese export porcelain on Dutch Delftware, integrating Chinese-inspired elements into Rococo Delft and other contemporary decorative styles.

Marked with a claw for ‘The Claauw’ or ‘De Klaauw’ factory 1661-1840.

Diameter: 23 cm.

Condition: good condition; minor fritting and typical rim wear consistent with age. No restoration.
