Dutch Delft Chinoiserie Kraak-style charger depicting a large dragonfly in a Chinese garden, sitting on a rock, set within a shaped octagonal border. The rim features fan-shaped panels with motifs of scrolls or lanterns on tassels and ribbons, alternating with fan-shaped floral panels, all separated by narrow ribbon panels.
The reverse bears underglaze blue painted O’s and X’s.
Kraak-style Chinoiserie designs were inspired by Chinese export porcelain, reflecting the European fascination with East Asian motifs in the 18th century. The dragonfly, central to the composition, is a symbol of good luck and prosperity in Chinese culture. Dutch potters adopted these motifs, integrating them into tin-glazed earthenware with local decorative conventions, producing large chargers for display in homes and collections.
Marked “CK” for Cornelis Koppens, owner of the Delft pottery ‘De Metaale Pot’ (1724–1757)
Condition:
Good condition overall; light chipping and some usual wear to the rim consistent with age.
Size:
30 centimeters
