Delft pitcher in transitional chinoiserie decor – late 17th century

Dutch Delftware pouring jug, 17th century. This tin-glazed earthenware jug is painted all around in soft blue with chinoiserie decoration, showing three figures in oriental attire among rocks, flowering plants, and landscape elements. The decoration is inspired by the Chinese Transitional style.

During the 17th century, Delft potters in the Netherlands were heavily influenced by Chinese porcelain imports, especially the transitional blue-and-white wares produced during the late Ming and early Qing periods. Dutch Delftware adapted these motifs for both domestic use and the European export market, creating a distinctive blend of European forms with Asian-inspired decoration.

This jug exemplifies the period’s cross-cultural exchange and the technical development of tin-glazed earthenware, making it a significant object for collectors of antique Dutch ceramics and European decorative pottery.
