ABOUT THIS ITEM

Pair of antique Dutch Delft plates dating from around 1800. Each plate is hand-painted in cobalt blue on a white tin-glazed surface. The central design features a classical urn, with symmetrical garlands of leaves and flowers extending horizontally. The rims have linear borders punctuated with small motifs such as rosettes or stylized leaves. The decoration follows the Neoclassical style, emphasizing symmetry, proportion, and motifs inspired by classical antiquity.

The plates reflect the transition in Delftware from late eighteenth-century Rococo to the restrained forms of early nineteenth-century Neoclassicism.

Part of the Dutch Delft tradition of blue-and-white earthenware produced for domestic and export markets, these plates are suitable for display in a collection of European ceramics, wall mounting, or presentation in a cabinet.
