ABOUT THIS ITEM

18th-century Savona alzatina or crespina, finely painted in cobalt blue on a white tin-glazed ground. The central medallion features a heraldic coat of arms depicting a lion crowned and accompanied by a putto, set within an elaborate architectural composition with figures.

The piece bears the ‘Stemma di Savona’ (Savona crest) mark, confirming its origin in one of the prominent Liguran maiolica workshops active during the 18th century. Savona was a major center of tin-glazed earthenware production, renowned for its characteristic blue-and-white palette that drew upon earlier 17th-century models while developing a distinct pictorial sophistication. The depiction of coats of arms and architectural settings reflects the workshop’s engagement with heraldic and baroque visual traditions, often produced for patrician or ecclesiastical commissions.
