ABOUT THIS ITEM

A Delft tin-glazed earthenware rectangular salad bowl painted in underglaze cobalt blue. The interior decorated with a landscape vignette depicting a gentleman standing on a terrace beside a balustrade within a garden setting. A small pavilion rises behind the figure, while a windmill appears on the distant horizon beneath a lightly sketched sky.
The scene is framed by an elaborate rococo cartouche composed of scrolling foliage and flowering branches. The broad everted rim is richly ornamented with alternating panels of stylised blossoms, latticework and foliate scrolls, forming a lively decorative border.
Painted in tonal washes and fine line work of cobalt blue on a tin-glazed ground, the decoration reflects the playful rococo ornament and landscape imagery characteristic of Delft production in the mid-18th century. some damages to the rim (see picture).
