ABOUT THIS ITEM

A Delft blue and white commemorative ceramic plate depicting Admiral Johan Arnold Zoutman (1724–1793), Holland, late 18th century.

Painted in underglaze blue with a Dutch warship sailing, inscribed “Zout : Man”, an early phonetic rendering of the admiral’s surname. The border is richly decorated with stylized flowers and insects.

Johan Arnold Zoutman served as Rear Admiral of the Dutch Republic and commanded the Dutch fleet during the Fourth Anglo-Dutch War (1780–1784). He is best remembered for his role in the Battle of Dogger Bank in 1781, one of the most celebrated Dutch naval engagements of the eighteenth century.

Patriotic Delftware commemorating Dutch naval heroes was produced following the battle, making pieces of this type both historically significant and highly collectible.

Diameter ca 23 cm.
