ABOUT THIS ITEM

Group of 5 small Dutch Delft polychrome ‘Peacock’ plates, De Klaauw factory, second half 18th century.
These polychrome Delft plates, are fine examples of 18th-century Delftware, featuring a central urn containing a fan of peacock feathers with stylized floral elements, painted in cobalt blue on a white tin-glazed earthenware surface. The rim has scrolling patterns with small floral motifs and an ocre-colored border, typical of European decorative pottery from this period.

The ‘Peacock’ motif (“pauwenstaart”) is a recurring decorative element in antique Dutch ceramics, commonly found on large Delft plates and chargers intended for display. The design reflects the influence of Chinese export porcelain on Dutch Delftware, integrating Chinese-inspired elements into Rococo Delft and other contemporary decorative styles.

These smaller size and polychrome examples are rarer and particularly sought after by collectors.

Marked with a claw for ‘The Claauw’ or ‘De Klaauw’ factory 1661-1840.

The largest is 19cm, the other ones are 16 cm.

Condition: All in good antique condition, some wear to the rims. One with old restoration to the border (see yellowed varnish on the back of the rim on the last pictures)
