Delft – pair of rococo salad bowls with a Italian landscape – mid 18th century

A pair of Dutch Delftware salad bowls decorated in blue and white, each of quadrangular form with a shaped rim.

The centre of each bowl depicts an Italianate landscape with figures, a tower and trees in the foreground, and ruins and hills in the distance. Both scenes follow the same composition, with slight variations in the details.

The borders are decorated with fruit, flowers and scrolling foliage, interspersed with rocaille ornament that follows the curves of the shaped rims.

Both bowls bear the De Bijl factory mark on the reverse.
