Pair of Blue and White Dutch Delftware Garlic-Neck Vases

A pair of octagonal blue and white Dutch Delftware garlic-neck vases, each with a bulbous body supported on a spreading foot and a tall, slender neck with a pronounced knop beneath the flaring trumpet-shaped mouth.

The vases are painted in the Transitional style with continuous narrative scenes of Chinese figures in a landscape with trees, rocks and vegetation. This type of decoration was inspired by Chinese porcelain produced during the transitional period between the Ming and Qing dynasties. Delft potters adapted these porcelain designs to the larger, strongly articulated forms of Dutch faience.
