Majolica apothecary jug. Savona manufacture, second half 17th century.
In monochrome majolica, ovoid body with a high cylindrical neck that opens into a large mouth with an everted rim with a thin and rounded lip, low foot, concave base and edge finished with a stick; a large ribbon handle with a wavy shape descends from under the rim to end in the most pronounced part of the belly, opposite the long and straight spout with a cylindrical profile, so-called “cannon”.
The morphology is typical of 17th century production, consistent with the banded decoration with a “calligraphic naturalistic” motif and scrolls with pharmaceutical writing in Gothic characters, accompanied by the depiction of small animals and pagodas in a rich plant repertoire.
Good antique condition: Some chips to the rim, handle and a larger chip to the foot.
Height: 19 cm.
